For most of human history, intelligence was expensive.
If you wanted a book, someone had to write it.
If you wanted advice, you needed an expert.
If you wanted a beautiful illustration, you needed an artist.
If you wanted software, you needed a programmer.
If you wanted an essay, you needed a writer.
If you wanted a translation, you needed someone who understood both languages.
Human knowledge and human skill were scarce.
And scarcity creates value.
Then we built machines that could manufacture things.
Now we are building machines that can manufacture something far more important:
intelligence itself.
And that may change us in ways we haven’t begun to understand.
We have spent centuries becoming useful
Modern society has taught us a simple lesson:
Learn something valuable, become good at it, and you will have something to offer the world.
So we studied.
We practiced.
We accumulated experience.
We spent years becoming doctors, engineers, teachers, programmers, writers, accountants, architects, designers and analysts.
We were told that expertise was our advantage.
And it was.
For generations, the ability to know somethingโreally know somethingโwas a form of economic and social power.
But AI is beginning to challenge that assumption.
What happens when knowledge that took a human being twenty years to acquire can be accessed by almost anyone in seconds?
What happens when competence can be summoned on demand?
What happens when the thing you spent your life becoming good at becomes something a machine can produce almost instantly?
That isn’t simply a jobs problem.
It is a human identity problem.
What are we worth when machines can do what we do?

Imagine spending ten years learning to write.
You read thousands of pages.
You study grammar.
You develop a voice.
You learn how to construct an argument.
You struggle.
You fail.
Eventually, you become genuinely good.
Then someone opens an AI application and types:
โWrite me a compelling 2,000-word essay about the future of technology.โ
Thirty seconds later, they have something surprisingly competent.
Your ten years didn’t disappear.
Your ability didn’t disappear.
But something else did.
Scarcity.
And scarcity is what gave your ability part of its value.
This is the strange economic reality of AI.
The technology doesn’t necessarily have to make humans incapable.
It only needs to make human capability abundant.
The end of the expert?
Not quite.
People will still need doctors.
They will still need engineers.
They will still need lawyers.
They will still need teachers.
They will still need writers.
But the relationship between expertise and value may change dramatically.
A doctor with access to AI may be vastly more capable than a doctor without it.
A programmer using AI may produce in a day what previously required a team for weeks.
A student with AI may research faster than a university department could have imagined twenty years ago.
This sounds wonderful.
And it is.
But there is a hidden problem.
When everyone’s productivity increases, being productive stops being special.
The competitive advantage moves somewhere else.
Perhaps toward judgment.
Perhaps toward taste.
Perhaps toward creativity.
Perhaps toward trust.
Perhaps toward reputation.
Perhaps toward the ability to ask the right questions.
And perhaps toward something we haven’t even identified yet.
The strange possibility: humans may become consumers of intelligence
There is something almost absurd about the future we are building.
For thousands of years, human beings produced knowledge and consumed it.
Now we may increasingly consume knowledge produced by machines.
You don’t know how to repair something?
Ask AI.
You don’t understand a legal concept?
Ask AI.
You want to learn a language?
Ask AI.
You want to write a business plan?
Ask AI.
You want to understand quantum physics?
Ask AI.
You want to learn how to code?
Ask AI.
The machine becomes an intellectual layer between the individual and the world’s accumulated knowledge.
That can be extraordinarily empowering.
But it can also create dependence.
And dependence changes people.
What happens when we stop practicing?
This may be the part nobody wants to discuss.
If calculators perform calculations, humans become less practiced at arithmetic.
If GPS handles navigation, humans become less practiced at navigating.
If spellcheck corrects our writing, we become less attentive to spelling.
So what happens when AI handles thinking?
Not all thinking, of course.
But increasingly large portions of it.
If AI writes our first drafts, will we become worse writers?
If AI summarizes every book, will we stop reading?
If AI explains everything, will we stop struggling to understand?
If AI generates ideas whenever we need them, will we become less capable of sitting alone with a blank page?
The danger isn’t that AI makes us stupid overnight.
The danger is subtler.
We may gradually stop exercising the abilities we no longer need to use.
And abilities that aren’t exercised tend to weaken.
Convenience has always had a price
Human beings love convenience.
We invented cars because walking was inconvenient.
We invented washing machines because washing clothes was inconvenient.
We invented calculators because mathematics was inconvenient.
We invented search engines because remembering information was inconvenient.
Every technological advancement removes some burden from human life.
That’s usually a good thing.
But some burdens were also exercises.
Walking made us physically stronger.
Memorizing made us mentally stronger.
Writing made us organize our thoughts.
Reading forced us to concentrate.
Solving difficult problems taught us patience.
Struggle wasn’t always the enemy.
Sometimes struggle was the training.
And AI may be the ultimate convenience machine.
It can remove an extraordinary amount of intellectual friction.
The question is whether we will become smarter because of that…
or simply less willing to think.
The value of human imperfection
There is another possibility.
Perhaps AI will eventually make human imperfection more valuable.
Think about photography.
When photographs became cheap and ubiquitous, photography didn’t disappear.
Instead, people began caring more about authenticity, composition, personality and meaning.
Something similar could happen with writing, art and other forms of creation.
When machines can produce technically perfect content instantly, technical perfection may become almost meaningless.
What becomes valuable is the thing behind it.
The experience.
The story.
The personality.
The perspective.
The strange little imperfections that reveal that a human being actually lived through something.
A machine can describe heartbreak.
But it has never had its heart broken.
A machine can write about childhood.
But it never had one.
A machine can describe standing alone in the rain at midnight.
But it has never stood there.
That distinction may become more importantโnot less.
Perhaps the most valuable thing will be having something to say
We have spent a great deal of time asking whether AI can create.
Maybe that’s the wrong question.
The more interesting question is:
What will humans create when creation itself becomes easy?
When everyone can generate an image, what image deserves attention?
When everyone can write an essay, what essay deserves to be read?
When everyone can make music, what music matters?
When everyone can produce videos, which stories are worth watching?
When production becomes abundant, meaning becomes scarce.
And meaning cannot simply be automated.
Someone still has to care.
Someone still has to choose.
Someone still has to decide that something matters.
We may have to redefine success
For a long time, success meant becoming better at something than most other people.
AI complicates that.
If machines eventually become better than us at an enormous number of intellectual tasks, competing with machines on their terms may be a losing game.
Maybe the future isn’t about becoming the best calculator.
Or the fastest writer.
Or the most efficient researcher.
Maybe it is about becoming the person who knows what deserves to be calculated, written or researched in the first place.
Judgment becomes more important when execution becomes cheap.
Taste becomes more important when production becomes effortless.
Character becomes more important when information becomes unlimited.
And genuine human experience becomes more important when artificial experience can be generated infinitely.
The question nobody can answer yet
AI may eventually give an ordinary person access to more knowledge, creativity and intellectual power than any individual in human history.
That could be one of the greatest gifts civilization has ever received.
But it could also create a strange psychological crisis.
If a machine can write better than me, what does being a writer mean?
If it can program better than me, what does being a programmer mean?
If it can know more than me, what does being knowledgeable mean?
If it can create better images than me, what does being an artist mean?
We have tied so much of our identity to our abilities.
AI is forcing us to confront an uncomfortable possibility:
Perhaps we were never valuable simply because of what we could do.
Perhaps we were valuable because we were human beings who cared about what we were doing.
That distinction may become the most important one of all.
The machines are coming for our skills. That may not be the real tragedy.
The real tragedy would be allowing them to come for our curiosity too.
Let AI write the first draft.
But read it.
Let AI explain the difficult concept.
But understand it.
Let AI generate ten ideas.
But decide which one deserves to exist.
Let AI make the work easier.
But don’t let it make you intellectually lazy.
Because perhaps the ultimate challenge of the AI age won’t be figuring out how humans can compete with machines.
Perhaps it will be figuring out how humans can use machines without slowly becoming less human themselves.
The machines may become better at thinking.
They may become better at creating.
They may eventually become better at many things we once considered uniquely ours.
But there is one thing they cannot decide for us:
What is worth caring about.
That decision remains ours.
